We cannot slip back into the innocent child's eye nor the merged eye of the romantic; rather, we should become apprentices or world-travelers, enter into modes of connection that privilege the other as teacher and guide, with the knower taking the position of listener, novice, foreigner. It will not be easy to develop a mature, affectionate relationship with others while taking full account of their real, and often radical, differences.
