According to the rabbis, we have four angels that balance each other out: one in front, one to the right side, another to the left side, and the last one behind us. The angel to the front is there to stop us, saying, "Take it easy. . . . Wait, what's the hurry?" The one to the rear pushes us ahead, saying, "Face it. Have the courage to go for it; don't back out now." The one to our left, near the heart, says, "Forget it. Let it be." The one to the right says, "Remember, don't let it go by, because you have a memory!"
Tuning in to the impulses of "advance, retreat, remember, and forget" is fundamental to calibrating our reactions.
