"Hate yourself as you would hate others."

Feeling the same rage towards ourselves that we feel towards another person when he or she does something unpleasant (that we also do) is the lowest level of "Love your neighbor as yourself." The first stage for the uninitiated person is to be able to hate himself when cutting off another car in traffic, with the same discharge of hatred he feels when someone else does this to him.

When this is achieved, it is soon possible to stop doing things to others which we would not like to have done to us — and then, perhaps, we begin to touch on loving others as we do ourselves.
