My congregation (and, of course, many others) has a bikkur cholim society, a group of people who share the responsibility of visiting the ill both in their homes and at the hospital. The group is made up of volunteers who go through a short but intensive training session with therapists, social workers, and hospital staff. The purpose of the training is to help the volunteers learn what they can and cannot do and what they should and should not say during their visits.
