Longing in the fullest sense feels far more like the pull to move beyond the cocoon, to enter a larger stream. Longing is an enormous, barely tapped force in our lives, a tremendous pull toward a substance that we are starving for but that gets revealed at the surface level of consciousness through our culture's attention to soap operas, romance novels, and sexual enticement. Most often this energy is used to sell cars, televisions, bedroom sets, and, sadly so, ourselves — a mass seduction full of momentary heat and little light. We are hungry for intimacy, for a sense of belonging buried deeply in our being.
