Our Christian religion is not exactly known for being tactile. True, we have the venerable custom of the "kiss of peace," a practice we prefer to call the sing of peace. But for many, even this opportunity for sacred touch has been reduced to a limp handshake and an awkward smile. We have the sacraments, too. We have the Eucharist which we actually receive in our open hand or on our extended tongue. That's touch. In addition, we have our baptism, our anointings, our reception of ashes, our laying on of hands. I would like to think that the more we come to know the Jesus of the gospels, the more we will find creative ways to reclaim sacred touch as God's instrument of blessing and healing.
