Suffering is an indication that we are binding ourselves to something that must inevitably die. We can ride the waves of change for a while, but the waves eventually crash onto the shore. When Christ said, "Do not lay up your treasures where rust corrupts or thieves let in," he seemed to be addressing this point about suffering.
