After [a] baby has been with the mother for a while, the children are asked to come, and the baby is then presented to them. One child will hold the baby while the others surround it in admiration. Children are close in age to newborns and remember their connection to the spirit world. Therefore, it makes sense that they would be the ones to welcome the newborn. The Dagara people believe that our wounds of abandonment start at this early stage of life, and so our welcoming of the newborn by children and the entire village at this early time in life is critical to the newborn's development.
