The Universe, in its unconditional love, helps us to see ourselves for who and what we are, even if it's through the actions of an unpleasant mate. When we trust that both the good" and the "bad" in us are God-given traits, we can begin to heal by reuniting with all of the qualities that we've stuffed away. Until then, we will see in others what we like and don't like in ourselves. Inevitably we attract partners and other people into our lives who mirror back these disowned parts of ourselves. I hate my husband's greed, my task is to find the greedy part of myself. It's helpful to understand that my greed may show up differently than it does for my husband. I may want all the food on the buffet table, or I may want to take credit for other people's projects at work, while my husband's greed shows up as hoarding all the profits from the family business.
