James Yellowbank, a Native American friend of mine, is fond of the aphorism that underlies much of his tradition's wisdom: "The task of life is to keep your world in order." As a contemplative in the world, I have found that so much depends on this task. Monastics strive to be masters of keeping their world in order and harmony, balancing a schedule to permit sufficient time for prayer, work, study, and recreation. Maintaining balance in their world requires the nourishment of their souls, bodies, and minds, all in the context of a community that supports them in their common goals.
