A paramahamsa is one who has reached the highest state of spiritual consciousness — unity with the Divine. The word literally means "great swan" in Sanskrit. The term is also a title of honor for the highest type of renunciate who breaks all ties with ordinary life, abandoning all possessions and signs of social status.
