As of today, the United States has made no serious attempt to apologize for these morally horrific instances of state-sponsored terrorism, much less to make amends to African Americans and Native Americans. . . .

The United States of America cannot bear to be seen as a nation that, over the course of time, has made mistakes that have resulted in massive suffering. . . . It is hard for U.S. citizens to see the United States and other nations too as having both excellent and terrible features. Our inability to live gracefully in this important moral tension is a spiritual problem.
