[The Japanese concept of] shoshin describes a consciousness that's always fresh, never bogged down by its own past. In the condition of shoshin, we look at each lesson or practice session in a given art as if it were our first time to experience it, and this should be true even in the case of techniques and exercises that have been practiced thousands of times. With the shoshin mindset, we can continue to learn year after year, never reaching the point where we think we've learned all there is to know about a certain art or facet of that art. Thus, we assure a never-ending growth and development in an art that never grows tiresome.
