Five characteristics of authentic mysticism
1. It is active and practical, requiring attention and pursuit of its Object.
2. It is entirely spiritual and transcendental, having no interest in magical control over worldly events.
3. It is centered in love.
4. Union with God . . . transforms the self for ever richer levels of life.
5. The authentic mystic becomes unselfish . . . (self-forgetting, self-surrendering, and self-transcending).
