Buddhists speak of the afflicted states of mind from which every person suffers and which we must all learn how to transform. These are the clouding, polluting forces of fear, anger, resentment, pride, and desire which can sweep over us like seasonal storms and leave us battered and repentant. Every contemplative tradition recognizes and warns its practitioners about the purgative way, the clearing and cleansing of our inner rooms.
