The business of prayer is not so much cure — that is for the physicians — but forgiving oneself, discovering acceptance, and thereby finding healing. When the blessing begins, "Heal us, Adonai, and we shall be healed," it is actually a request for a permanent change in the worshipper, that he or she not fall back into the old patterns and habits. Each of our limbs (traditionally numbered at 248) will thus be increasingly nourished and draw its life force from the soul until there is no place devoid of holiness. Healing, then, is a psycho-spiritual state wherein we forgive ourselves and realize that holiness is everywhere, perhaps even in our own infirmity! Indeed, such forgiving acceptance may be a necessary prerequisite for all healing.
