In exploring our inner self through the pathways of the heart, we may be tempted to believe that we could one day understand everything. We could explain all miracles if only we could train our senses and feelings to be subtle enough. . . . Whatever sensitivity we may develop through our bodies, nervous systems, and senses, whatever self-control we may master, divine mystery will remain. The following Quranic meditation (Sura 22.63) expresses this:

My Beloved, please ask everyone to notice how
the One Being sends rain from the sky
and immediately the fields green.
The One's sight and sense cannot be fathomed.
so subtle, nurturing, mysterious
bringing the seed-self of all beings to fruition.

Mystery remains an active force in the universe, like a wildcard in the game of existence. As the saying goes, this could be good news or bad news, depending on how your life is going at the moment. All other things being equal, the Sufi usually opts for mystery.
