Zen is also characterized as a path of crooked wisdom. You already possess the jewel of your own self-nature even though you live for much of the time somewhat remote from such awareness. You cannot be given what you already have and you cannot be taught what is earlier than knowing: the "crookedness" of the Way, its resort to energetic and sometimes surprising means to awaken realization that there is nowhere to go even while it is hard to truly arrive where you already are, stems from this strange fact.
