In The Secret Garden: . . . Colin was confined to his room as an invalid. Everyone around him told him he was sick and was going to die. Mary said defiantly, "If everyone told me that, I wouldn't do it!" She encouraged him to live by telling him of a secret, over-grown garden on the estate that she and another young friend were trying to bring back to life. They took Colin there in his wheelchair and taught him to walk and play. The garden became a healing balm for Colin and his father, who had given up hope for his son.
