All religions, particularly the nontheistic ones, have practiced silence and sought it out. Buddhism especially lives in silent contemplation; here silence is more prayer than words ever can be. Christians of the Orthodox traditions enter into ceremonial silence "in order to give God the word." Quakers begin their worship assembles with a lengthy silence.
