For me, jihad is a spiritual struggle, or an internal struggle against limitations, against lying, against anything bad. Jihad in this idea that each person struggling with himself or herself is actually very liberating. For most Muslims, jihad is seen as a challenge from God to improve oneself constantly — not an excuse to make war.
