If we lose our frame of reference to the natural world, to actual bedrock, we lose contact with who we are as animals. We can talk about the mind and the spirit, but we still largely perceive the world through our bodies, through flesh and bone and blood. That is what the land reminds us of, and I feel that is where that deep sense of humility comes from.
