I think about Breyten Breytenbach, the South African poet who has worked for years against apartheid and spent several years in prison. We were in Mexico City at a symposium about environmental degradation and social change. I asked him, "If we are interested in a revolution of the spirit, an evolution of the spirit, what do we do?" And he looked at me dead on and said directly, "You Americans, you have mastered the art of living with the unacceptable." And he walked away.
