I offer my definition of prayer as "a radical response to life." Being radical, it is about roots (radix means "root" in Latin) or depth forces that bring nourishment and life. I note two basic roots that prayer is about: first is celebration or our Yes to life — I call this "mysticism" or our "becoming rooted," prayer as radical psychologically. The second response to life that is radical is our No to life's enemies such as injustices — I call this "prophecy" or our "uprooting." This is prayer as radical socially.
