Here at the ocean's edge I can feel, as the theologian Paul Tillich said, "the ebb and flow of the universe." Even more apparent is the ebb and flow of the human animal. The body takes charge. This is an existence that begins in the senses and is guided by instinct. My body determines when I rise, when I eat, when I nap, when I am in motion, when I sleep.
