Raising children might help me learn something about God. Theologians spend most of their time in their studies. But the best ones, I noticed, had done some fieldwork in living. I would do mine at play groups.

Within months I knew I was right. Living with small children was a crash course in all the themes I studied: love, grace, creation, revelation, forgiveness, law, suffering, power. Ten years later, it was clear that parenting was the most intensive seminar on spirituality around. I should not have been surprised. Deuteronomy says that wisdom "is not in heaven . . . neither is it across the sea. . . . It is very near to you."
