The very spirit that has been denied entry in liberal and fundamentalist churches has exploded in new forms of inspiration. As different as they seem at first glance, spiritualism, new thought, the pentecostal movement, and the new age movement reflect not only the thirst for spiritual experience but the gift of living waters that restores the human soul. Tongue speaking, prophetic utterances, voices from beyond the grave, and communication with spirit guides all attest to a need that has not been addressed with fundamentalist or mainstream churches. This is the need not only to hear about God but to experience God firsthand, and with it the further need for spiritual guidance in the interpretation of encounters with realities beyond ourselves.
