Even as a young boy, Jesus is shown sitting with the elders in the temple, listening to them and asking them questions. Jesus subscribed to the three "pillars of learning" too. He was good at seeing much and studying much. He had the habit of looking beneath surfaces and beyond appearances. He gazed at a gruff and stubborn fisherman named Simon, for example, and saw a dynamic and devoted leader. He watched a poor widow drop two tiny coins into the temple treasury and pronounced her the most generous giver of all.

Jesus was always urging his disciples to "study" life and thus to learn from it. Over and over again he exhorts his followers with words such as these: look, listen, take care, remember, watch, and pray — words that induce learning.
