p>An Excerpt from The Power of Soul: Living the Twelve Virtues by Robert Sardello

Robert Sardello challenges us to begin the work of inner transformation and the outer work of bringing peace and justice to a troubled world. Here is an excerpt from the Epilogue on the importance of the virtues in the post-September 11 world.

"Love is a new prospect since this day. Patience, compassion, and equanimity come to harbor our grief. Faithfulness and balance are now acceptable. Courage, devotion, and selflessness are gaining in popularity. Courtesy became surprisingly evident in the aftermath of September 11. Truth is harder to find in the collective world, but individuals are now asking if they are being truthful to their lives and what they are doing. Perhaps the most challenging virtue in this time is discernment, and it may be the one most needed. We have to discern the difference, for example, between revenge and protection. And we have to discern the difference between a lust for war that will spread a contagion for destruction and standing firm in the conviction that freedom must be preserved."
