"The Transforming Christian . . .

  • is 'in-spired' (that is, 'breathed into,' enlivened) by Jesus, gradually experiences all creation as gracious and benevolent, and exhibits growing recognition of and openness to Love at the center of all that is. [Everything else is commentary on this central reality
  • more and more translates and interprets life experiences in light of a personal encounter with Mystery in and through Jesus
  • demonstrates growing compassion as a response to an experience of God, and feels not only called by but compelled to work on behalf of the poor and for peace and justice
  • is not blind to the dark side of human nature and life and recognizes the reality of what some might call 'evil,' but is not overwhelmed or rendered hopeless by it; possesses a resilient sense of optimism about the future of humanity
  • is increasingly self-aware and self-reflective without becoming self-absorbed or egocentric
  • desires to fully embrace and live in the present moment, the Now; yearns to be truly present, right here, right now; free of regret about the past or anxiety about the future
  • experiences and expresses expanding and increasingly inclusive images of God – and, if it occurs, is not disturbed or disheartened if preferred or comfortable images of God dissolve
  • manifests a deepening sense of sheer gratitude for all that is
  • similarly, demonstrates attitudes of genuine peace, joy, hope, awe, and wonder – but 'not as the world gives them'
  • engages in healthy religiosity; understands that religion and religious practice is 'a finger pointing at the moon,' but also recognizes religion as important and helpful if not necessary for the spiritual life
  • accepts and embraces one's own creaturehood and earthiness, including inevitable death; exhibits genuine humility
  • feels increasingly aware of, one with, and responsible for all creation"
