“The best way to read haiku is leisurely. With that understanding, sometimes you will want to read quickly — that is, not getting 'stuck' on a particular haiku while seeking its 'meaning.' Keep moving until a haiku finds you. When intrigued by a particular haiku, linger. Examine the specific words. Analyze the line breaks. Look for the kigo (seasonal word) and kireji (line break). For these and other terms, see Appendix II. Can you identify the season? Do you see where the break or transition is? Would you say this haiku is comical, or sensual, or traditional? Meditate. Choose (or write) a haiku and live with it for an hour — or even a day. What are you thinking or feeling — or remembering? Consider memorizing your favorite haiku. You might even try your hand at 'translating' a haiku into your own words.”
