This exhilarating work by the great English mystic Evelyn Underhill consists of four radio broadcasts given in 1936. She asserts that the spiritual life has nothing to do with "a fenced off devotional patch" or "mere cultivation of one's soul: poking about our interior premises with an electric torch." The spiritual life has to do with adoration of God, living the abundant life, and giving equal attention to the seen and the unseen. Once our spiritual senses are put on alert, we can see small miracles happening all around us.

Another element of the spiritual life is cooperation with God. According to Underhill, "We are agents of the Creative Spirit in this world trying to see things, persons, and choices from the angle of eternity." This gives us bold new responsibilities as co-workers with God in the ongoing task of extending the kingdom. For we are, after, meant to be agents of the Creative Spirit in the world.
