Harriet Ziefert is the author of more than 200 books. In this one she focuses on the friendship between Bunny, a stuffed animal, and Charlie, a very active little kid. They do everything together. Bunny sees Charlie as a teacher and their school covers a varied curriculum: "When we play doctor, Charlie is the boss. I learn about Ouch! Charlie likes buttered noodles for lunch. I learn about Messy.”

Not everything is hunky-dory between them. There are times when Bunny feels awkward: for instance when Charlie’s mother sends him to his room when he is rude to her and Charlie teaches Bunny the meaning of time-out. Or when Bunny feels jealous because he is ignored as Charlie and his girlfriend play with other toys. These emotions are real and kids will identify with them.

Ziefert is a master storyteller and the perky paintings by Barroux are delightful. The spiritual message is clear: we are teachers bringing meaning, light, and love to others in the school of everyday reality. Like a rollercoaster ride, there are plenty of dips and unexpected turns to deal with and accept. Bunny is a gifted observer as he narrates the lesssons from Charlie. Learning is not a chore but a blessing, especially when the teacher is a friend and companion.
