William J. O'Malley has published more than 30 books on spirituality and Christian living. He teaches at Seattle University in Washington State. In describing his intention for this devotional book, he sees it as "conversation starters for anyone interested in giving God a chance to become a better friend." At the beginning of each of these brief meditations, O'Malley pleads: "Quiet my mind. Open my heart. Quicken my soul." Each then includes the following ingredients: Presence, Grace, Psalm, Hymn, Reading, Scripture, and Closing.

Here is a sampler of some of the quips and quotes that serve as bits and pieces of prayer:

• "Father, help me make the best self I can from what I have."

• "Father, remind me that a single seed can start a forest."

• "Great Friend,
let me grasp
that life is too short
to be small.
Amen."

• "Father, remind me I've achieved nothing all alone."

• "Father, never let me lose my zest for living."

• "Great Friend,
let me rejoice in the quest
without demanding
to 'arrive.'
Amen."
