Elmer, the patchwork elephant, and his cousin Wilber, are looking for adventure. On a visit to Grandpa Eldo, the old man tells that when he was young, he used to follow the river down to the coast and watch the whales go by. They decide to duplicate this adventure, but they need help from other animals along the way.

Some monkeys and crocodiles put together a raft made out of logs for the two elephants. They narrowly escape catastrophe when they almost capsize in rapids. This ordeal tires them both out and by the time they wake up in the morning, they are at sea with the whales. A few more surprises fill Elmer and Wilber with wonder.
