Elmer is a striking patchwork elephant who despite his snappy appearance does not think mainly of himself. Out for a walk one day he comes upon a small butterfly trapped behind a fallen branch. He recues the grateful creature who says, "Perhaps one day I'll be able to repay you. If you do need me, just call out my name."

At first Elmer can't imagine how a small butterfly could rescue an elephant. But when he gets in trouble, that's exactly what happens.

Many children's books encourage us to give thanks to those who provide us with just what we need when we find ourselves in desperate straits. Parents, grandparents and other allies of children will revel in works like Elmer and Butterfly where bright colors and bright optimism blend together in a world where one good deed deserves another!
