Calvin is a starling who likes to read but the letters are not in focus for him. He remembers that his Uncle used to walk into trees all the time. So Calvin gets his eyes checked by Mr. Seewell, the Optometrist and gets a pair of glasses; he likes to call them "spectacles." But when he joins his flock, his cousins ridicule him and call him "geeky."

Calvin, as a good reader would do, recalls that Ben Franklin, Gandhi, and John Lennon all wore glasses. He is further buoyed by a walk in the woods where he sees things he'd never seen before. When he has an accident and needs some help, his trusty new glasses provide the key to being rescued.

Writer Jennifer Berne has written a humorous children's picture book illustrated by Keith Bendis. Although designed for preschool children, this clever book will appeal to the all those who wear glasses and can recall the delights and the disappointments of the new experience.
