The author of this book was the first rabbi of the influential Sixth & I Synagogue in Washington, DC. She’s currently leading a congregation in Aspen, CO. But her audience for this book is probably largest among those who listen to the PRX podcast “Chutzpod!” which Stutman cohosts with actor Joshua Malina (from The West Wing, etc.).

Ten inspirational chapters are formed around ten common Hebrew words, including Chapter 1’s chesed (lovingkindness), Chapter 5’s mamon (money), and Chapter 8’s tzedek (justice).

She explains in her Introduction that “Judaism is not unique; there are sparks of meaning making and meaning building in every culture, religion, or spiritual practice,” and “It shouldn’t only be Jews who get to benefit from Jewish practices.” In this way, she sets up her plan for sharing the riches of Jewish spiritual wisdom with people of all backgrounds.

The values of sex, happiness (see the excerpt accompanying this review), the body, education, community, resting, and mourning are all here, as well.

Stutman wants to offer a summary of the wisdom of Jewish tradition for all people seeking a life of purpose and connection. This book goes a long way — with concise chapters, published attractively — to making it possible. Highly recommended.
