Tony Schwartz was a writer for Newsweek, a reporter for The New York Times, and a contributing editor for New York magazine. At the height of this successful career, he decided that he still didn't know what was important in life nor how to get it. He embarked upon a five-year personal quest for meaning.
In his travels across America, Schwartz finds individuals who have developed "innovative and accessible ways to tap specific aspects of the human potential." He experiences various techniques and technologies for self-transformation at a meditation retreat, in a biofeedback laboratory, in a right-brain drawing course, and in a dream workshop. He evaluates the work and philosophy of Ram Dass, Michael Murphy, Elmer Green, Betty Edwards, Jack Kornfield, Joseph Goldstein, Ken Wilber, Helen Palmer, and others.
By the end of his personal quest for wisdom in America, Schwartz has come to a fresh appreciation of the interplay between mind, body, heart, soul, and spirit.
