John S. Dunne has taught theology at the University of Notre Dame for many years and is the author of more than 15 books. For him, the spiritual quest has always been an adventure, and many of his major concerns grow out of his interest in story, myths, symbols, poetry, literature, and music. In this autobiography, Dunne calls his life a journey in time. He pays tribute to his father for inspiring him with the idea of reading to learn and his mother for encouraging him to read for pleasure. The author quotes Ursula LeGuin: "Story is our boat for sailing on the river of time."

Dunne's story centers around the search for meaning, his pilgrimages to various special places, his teaching career, his books, his love of music, and his close encounter with death. The latter taught him "about living in the heart" and learning what it is to love "with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your might." Four Thomas Cole paintings are used to highlight Dunne's journey through childhood, youth, manhood, and old age.

For all those who remain fascinated with the challenge of loving God with heart, mind, body, and soul, this is required reading.
