According to Rabbi Morris B. Margolies, angels and devils are symbols of the forces of good and evil that lie within us all. The author discusses their role in the Hebrew Bible with commentary on the activities of these agents of God in the lives of Moses, Jacob, Elijah, and others. He also reflects upon what is revealed about angels in the Dead Sea Scrolls, the mystical classic Zohar, Hasidic tales, and the fiction of Isaac Bashevis Singer. This expansive survey is well done. By surveying the evolving role of angels over three thousand years of Jewish history, it encourages us to become better acquainted with the gathering of angels within us today.
