Leonard Sweet, former Chancellor of United Theological Seminary in Dayton, Ohio, takes a cue from Faith Popcorn, John Naisbitt, and Peter Drucker and tries to sniff out the future by looking at current trends. He wants the church to wake up to the realities of postmodernism — a cocooning culture, spiritual seekers, the age of information, high quality indulgences, globalism, and the graying of America. Sweet's radical ideas about sensuous worship services, people-based ministries, and "egonomic" communities are right on target. His vision of a 21st century Christianity is eclectic, electric, and eccentric. Sweet would agree with the Zulu proverb which advises, "You have to go fetch the future. It's not coming toward you. It's running away." For churches determined to fetch the future, this road map will be a big help.
