This is a record of the third Mind and Life Conference bringing together Buddhist teachers and Western scholars to discuss matters of mutual interest. The theme of this 1991 dialogue is the body-mind connection. Subjects covered include the immune system and its cognitive implications (Francisco Varela), ways the brain regulates emotion (Cliff Saron), how stress affects the body (Daniel Brown), mindfulness as medicine (Sharon Salzberg and Jon Kabat-Zinn), and the virtues in Christian and Buddhist traditions (Lee Yearley). Some of the most interesting exchanges between the Dalai Lama and the Western presenters resolve around issues such as the Buddhist equivalent of sin; the use of inner resources to combat stress; and the healing powers of self-esteem, equanimity, and compassion. Editor Daniel Goleman's talk on "Afflictive and Nourishing Emotions: Impacts on Health" is thought-provoking.
