This novel probes the always shifting relationship between a rich and self sufficient Englishwoman and her manipulative and flamboyant aunt. Although they are world's apart in temperament, family feeling ties them together in ways that neither can explain. Brookner's theme here is the soulful desires and attachments which give women's lives meaning. Although Jane and her colorful aunt exhibit a love/hate relationship over the years, they don't ever abandon each other. In the end, both are surprised by a sweet grace that sneaks up on them.
