In her pathbreaking book Anatomy of the Spirit medical intuitive Caroline Myss shared her distinctive vision of energy medicine. Here she claims that fear of change is the chief impediment to healing. Myss presents an incisive critique of a phenomenon she calls "woundology" where traumatized or ill individuals get stuck and refuse to let go of the past. She goes on to delineate five myths about healing that are roadblocks to getting well.

Myss believes that the present astrological age of Aquarius has ignited in people "the healing fire that lies in wait deep within the human spirit." Using her model of the seven centers of spiritual and physical power, she outlines the ways illness can become a catalyst to transformation. Myss also explains how the chakras, the symbol systems of the Christian sacraments, and the Tree of Life of the Jewish Kabbalah form a journey of spiritual development. Throughout, the author makes a place for mystery in her overview: "Healing is not a quest to solve your mysteries, but to learn how to live within them."
