In this spunky romantic comedy written and directed by Lake Bell, we are introduced to the very competitive world of the voiceover industry in Los Angeles, California. When the reigning king of the realm dies, Sam Spoto (Fred Melamed) is presumed to be the heir to the throne. He has been at it for years but has slowed down in order to spend more time with his much younger girlfriend, Jamie (Alexandra Holden). At the same time, he has told his daughter Carol Solomon (Lake Bell) to get her own place to live. So she moves in with her sister Dani (Michaela Watkins), who is married to Moe (Rob Corddry).

Carol is a vocal coach who sometimes works for Louis (Demetri Martin), an audio engineer. He has a crush on her but is not confident enough to act on it. When Carol gets a voiceover contract instead of Gustav (Ken Marino), everyone in the business is stunned. This complicates matters even more for her since he is the one her father is backing as the next top dog in the business. When Sam learns that his daughter and Gustav are competing for the trailer voiceover of an upcoming "quadrilogy" fantasy film about female warriors, he decides to enter the competition to show his daughter that he's better than she is.

As writer and director, Bell has created a comedy with plenty of zippy one-liners. She also does a fine job as an actress playing the socially awkward member of a very dysfunctional family who is serious about becoming the best voiceover performer in the business. Melamed shines as her selfish father; he makes the most of the scene when Sam gives an acceptance speech for a life achievement award. Rob Corddry delivers an authentic performance as a quirky, vulnerable guy trying to keep his marriage alive.

Special features on the DVD include a commentary with Lake Bell; an alternate opening sequence; deleted scenes; and a gag reel.
