A riveting drama directed by Jim Sheridan (My Left Foot), In the Name of the Father is about Gerry Conlon (Daniel Day-Lewis), a Belfast youth who along with his friend and two others was arrested in 1975 for the terrorist bombings of two pubs outside London which killed five people. Under great pressure to solve the crime, the police brutalized Conlon and extracted a false confession from him. Later, they imprisoned his father (Pete Postlethwaite) and his aunt as co-conspirators. The film portrays the suffering endured by Conlon and his father thanks to this miscarriage of justice. A lucky lawyer (Emma Thompson) proved malfeasance in the case and all those imprisoned were released.
