The third great [Hindu] divinity, Shakti, also appears in Hindu tradition as Shiva's wife, and in many temple sculptures the two are shown in voluptuous, sensuous embrace. Hinduism, as distinct from Christianity, displays a magnificence and celebration around fertility and sexuality, and the human sexual encounter is understood to have global as well as personal significance. The procreative energy is a primary expression of the dance, which itself is inherently creative — for person and planet alike. The dance of Shiva symbolizes the dancing universe itself, expressed in the ceaseless flow of energy going through an infinite variety of patterns that melt into one another.
