What love is this that guides me? It is my heart's longing taking one shape after another, an enthusiasm for stories, an enthusiasm for music, an enthusiasm for what I can see in one ray of the sun." It is a longing that becomes love by way of friendship, surviving the ins and outs of friendship to become "such a love as none can part." It is a longing, I believe, that turns out to be the love of God, the longing Augustine is speaking of when he says in prayer "our heart is restless until it rests in you." Its restless movement from image to image can take us on a tour of memory, never letting us rest in any one image or become obsessed or possessed by an image and taken thus with violence.
