By way of illustration, let us look at a few examples of how people and nature might interact in small places, such as cities. It is commonly acknowledged that cities people like are ones sprinkled with many patches of green space: Paris (famous for its parks), Rome, London, Vancouver, New York come to mind. New York City, for example, has 26,000 acres of parkland in addition to Central Park (in fact, those 26,000 acres are equivalent to 31 Central Parks!). That is astonishing and immediately makes one realize the potential within one of the most populated American cities for urban wildlands. Ninety-five percent of New Yorkers believe that the parks are important to their lives; moreover, creating pocket parks out of vacant lots has given vitality to neighborhoods.
